More Fictional Women Who Are My Hero

May 25, 2008 by katy

Spammilicious today.

I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately and last night it got me thinking. TV women aren’t my only heroes, there are some very strong women in books who I admire, so here is my list.

Eve Dallas: The In Death Series by Nora Roberts (writing as JD Robb)- Eve, how to describe Eve? She’s gone from a nameless abandoned child to a no nonsense cop in New York. She made herself, got to where she is with her intelligence and sheer force of will. Over the course of the books she grows thanks to her best friend Mavis, her assistant Peabody and her eventual lover, the enigmatic Roarke. But she never loses what makes her strong.

Lessa: The Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey- Lessa should have been royalty, should have been an heiress, but fate decided otherwise. She becomes a dragonrider and finds her place there with her queen Ramoth. She helps bring about change on Pern, strengthening the waning dragonrider fleet. She does this by solving a riddle and traveling through time to bring from the past help for the present. Lessa is a force to be reckoned with.

VI Warshowski: from self titled series of books by Sara Paretsky and Kinsey Milhone: The Alphabet Series by Sue Grafton- I’m putting these two together because they share the job of Private Investigator, but they also have their differences. Kinsey was a cop before going the PI route. VI was a lawyer with the Public Defender’s office. Kinsey’s been twice divorced and currently suffers from a lack of love life. VI has a lover who is in war torn Iraq right now, but I don’t think she’s ever tied the knot. But both these women hold strong, kick ass and ask questions later. They both have strong ties to their close friends and neighbors. And whether it’s investigating murder on the beaches of California (Kinsey) or fraud in the business district of Chicago (VI) both women get the job done.

Skye O’Malley: the O’Malley series by Bertrice Small- Who says women in romances can’t be strong? Skye has to be strong in a time when women were expected to stay home and be wives and mothers. She takes control of her family until her younger brother can be the leader of her clan. She outlives six husbands. She raises a family of children, grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren to rival Queen Victoria’s. She manages a shipping company. And she spars with the great Queen Elizabeth herself. Skye is anything but a typical romance heroine.

Meme! Five Fictional Women who are My Heroes

I love this meme!

Susan Ivonova, Babylon 5: Tough, but knew when to bend. Smart, innovative, thought fast on her feet. Vulnerable, but only on her terms. She had a wit about her that I wish we could have seen more of. She should have had a better send off. Also, Russian Jew in space in the future, win.

Buffy Summers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: She may not have been the Council’s ideal, but she got the job done and better than many others did. She strove to have both the destiny she didn’t ask for and the normal life she craved. Watching her face real monsters made all my metaphorical ones pale in comparison.

Dana Scully, The X-Files: The fact that she passed on a medical career to serve her country is a big factor here, but she’s also cool under pressure, logical, steadfast and loyal. Her love for her work showed as did her trust in her partner no matter what. She faced death with a grace and dignity I aspire to.

Teyla Emmagan, Stargate Atlantis: The outsider who joins the fight. The stranger no one trusts until they have to. She’s become an integral part of the team and takes no guff from anyone, even her friends. She is the heart of the city. Plus, she showed that pregnant women can still kick ass.

Janet Fraiser, Stargate SG-1: The tough no nonsense base doctor who even had rugged Generals quaking in their boots. But she was also kind and compassionate. She fought alien viruses with little or no help, raised an alien child as her own, went out into the field to help an injured man who couldn’t be moved. She deserved better.

Letter Meme from Gileswench

Comment if you want to do this and I'll give you a letter. Then you go and list ten things you like starting with that letter.
I got J.

10. Joy: What I get everyday from the people I have met and the community that is here on LiveJournal.

9. Junior Mints: I have an unholy love for them. I can't explain it.

8. Jelly Bellies: the only jellybean I eat mostly because they don't TASTE like a jelly bean. And who doesn't love a candy that comes in pina colada flavor?

7. Jokes: Be they corny or brand new, silly or sarcastic, rude, crude or downright raunchy, I love to laugh.

6. John DeLancie: The inimitable Q. I met him last year at Dragon*Con and he was an utter delight, both at his panel and in person.

5.Jack Hodgins: The bug man of Bones. I fell in love with him from moment one, so utterly geeky and adorable. And now he's got the hot girl in Angela and they're so sweet together, what's not to love?

4. Jack Harkness: A new love, but what a man to love. Funny, brilliant, loyal, angsty and utterly gorgeous. Too bad he's only got eyes for Ianto.

3. Joe Flannigan/John Sheppard: I have to put the man and his character together because I feel like they are one and the same. Smart, sexy and utterly adorkable all in one tall, lean package. And only Joe can make riding a skateboard at 40 something look totally hot.

2: Jack O'Neill: With two L's because the other one isn't as funny. Sexy, snarky and again, adorkable. I'd want him to save the world any day. And where would Jack be without….

1. Jackson, Daniel: from scruffy looking spacemonkey to lean mean Ori-fighting machine, I have loved Daniel since the Stargate movie and it's only grown stronger over 10 great years.

Answers to Character Meme.

Okay , here are the answers to the character meme. First, the characters.
1. Zoe Washburne
2. Angel
3. Molly Walker
4. Rupert Giles
5. Teyla Emmagen
6. Matt Parkman
7. Cordelia Chase
8. Jack O'Neill
9. Tara Maclay
10. Carson Beckett

And now the questions
From

9 and 7 decide to go ask 4 and 1 on a double date in hopes to hook up. Who ends up with who? Which pairing hit it off and which have trouble. Where did they go ?

They all decide to go to a coffee shop, because there's no pressure. They all get along very well, but Zoe is not ready to date (after a traumatic event),  she just came because her friends set this up. Giles knows Cordy and Tara but never saw them as potential dates. Giles could have hooked up with Zoe but understands her reasons for not dating. Cordy  and Tara have a little bit of chemistry and decide to meet up again.

From

* 1 and 5 end up on a deserted island. They each have one object. What is each object, why do they have it, and how do the two of them get along?

* 10 and 3 go on a blind date together. What do they do, how are they dressed, and how does the date go?

* 2 sends 9 sexy underwear. What happens?

First qustion: Zoe has a gun, but that's not really of any help, but also has a knife as does Teyla. They use the knives to cut down trees and make a boat, which Teyla knows how to do well. They  are very similiar and get along very well. (fiareynne has this theory that Teyla/Carson is the Zoe/Wash of SGA.)

Second question: Well Molly is underage so wouldn't go out on a date, but if she was of an age, Carson would take her to somewhere romantic because that's the type of person Carson is.

Third question: Tara is kind of surprised to get anything from Angel because she has never actually met him. I'm not sure why Angel would send Tara sexy underwear except maybe as a gift.

From

5 puts on some music. How does 7 react?
1 lends 10 his/her favorite book. 10 reads it, and says what about it?

First question: Cordy thinks Teyla's music is very New-Agey but listens to it anyway because there is nothing better to do.

Second question:Zoe isn't much for reading, but what she does send is fascinating to Carson who thanks her for sending it.

From

4 and 7 are on a road trip across America. Who wants to stop where? Do they make it to their destination or end up having to go back home?

1 and 9 go ice skating. Are they both good at it or does one suck more than the other?

First question: If Giles and Cordy were forced to go on a road trip they would kill each other. They wouldn't get very far at all because Cordy's non-stop chatter would drive Giles up the wall.

Second question: Tara sort of knows how to ice-skate but not very well. Zoe has only ever heard of ice skating and is intrigued as to how it works.

Finally from

1 and 10 are in prison. What crime did each commit, and who is whose bitch?

8, 6, 3,and 2 are in a rock band together. Who plays what instrument? Who is the lead singer? What breaks the band up? And do they have a reunion concert tour in fifteen years?

5 and 9 are working together on a school project. What subject are they studying together? Does one of them pull all the weight while the other takes all the credit? What is their final grade on the project?

First question: Zoe is in prison for war crimes or smuggling, not exactly sure which, or possibly both. Carson is there for serious ethical violations. Carson would so be Zoe's bitch because she is just that kind of person. (see above re:Zoe/Wash and Carson/Teyla)

Third question: Teyla is no longer in school but agrees to help Tara with the project on the mystical and mythical. They share the weight, Teyla offering insights that Tara had never thought of. Tara gets an A+.

Second question:*giggles* I think this is my favorite question. Molly plays tamborine, with lots of enthusiasm. Matt plays drums but also doubles as a roadie. Jack is security for the band, co-ordinating everything. Angel, well he tried to sing but everyone immediatly agreed that he should never, ever sing. Ever. So he becomes manager of the band. They break up when Molly turns 18 and decides to go to college. A reunion tour is out of the question because Molly is more interested in family, Matt and Jack are far too old to be touring and Angel died, sort of.

1) Make a list of 10 characters.
2) Assign each character a number.
3) Without telling anyone who's on the list or the character's assigned number, get questions from your flist about what they'd like to know about them.

IE: “If 3 and 4 were trapped in a cave together with only a blanket and a toothpick, what would they do?” (The more random the better!)

4) Post the answers and who was who on the list.

Five Things ______ Doesn't Know About _______

Name two characters, and I will write a list or a ficlet or something that straddles the list/ficlet line. I decide what order the names go in the blanks. They will get answered in the order they appeal to me (but I'll try to do them all eventually)!

Please no crossover requests apart from BtVS/Angel or SGA/SG-1, assuming the characters know or know of each other in canon, because otherwise there's a whole lot they don't know. Fandoms to be included: Firefly, BtVS, Angel, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate SG-1.

5 questions meme

January 10, 2008 by katy

 1. Leave me a casual comment of no particular significance, like a lyric to your current favorite song, your favorite kind of sandwich, or maybe your favorite game. Any remark, meaningless or not.
2. I will respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. Update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. Include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in your own post.
5. When others respond with a desultory comment, you will ask them five questions.

Questions asked by

and their answers, under the cut.

1. What is your all-time favorite ship and why?

I'm gonna have to go with Buffy/Giles because they were the first ship I wrote and the ship I've written the most for. Horray for Slayers and their Watchers.

2. Oxford comma or serial comma?

Serial comma. Sadly as an English major I am guilty of the comma splice.

3. What is your favorite line of Whedon-related dialogue?

Oh that's easy, “Intervention”,  the enire exchange between Buffy and Giles before she goes off on her visionquest.

Buffy: So, how's it start?
Giles: I, uh, jump out of the circle, and I jump back in it,
and then um (reluctantly)…I shake my gourd.
Buffy: Oh, I know this ritual. The ancient shamans were
next called upon to do the hokey pokey and turn themselves around.
Giles:(jumps out of circle, jumps back in, shakes gourd) Go quest.
Buffy: And that's what it's all about.
4. How many original stories have you written (choose your own parameters to define this question)?
I will confess to having written three connected orginal stories when I was a teenager, but they are soooo bad they will never see the light of day. Ever.

5. If you need to take a note and are out of paper, how do you take your note?

If I had a pen, I'd probably write on my hand.
