Okay Cooper and Wright, You Have My Attention
When it was announced that Robert Cooper and Brad Wright were introducing a new Stargate franchise (Stargate:Universe) mere days after the announcement of the cancellation of Atlantis, I believe I mentioned that there was no way on God’s green Earth that I was going to give Universe a chance.
I may have to revise that statement.
Fresh from Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello, Robert Carlyle has been cast in Universe. Carlyle has been in quite a few things, but I recognize him mostly from The Full Monty. Consider me interested. From producers who said their main objective was to gear Universe towards a “younger demographic”, the choice of Carlyle is an interesting one. And as such, I believe I may give at least the pilot episode a look see.
This in no way invalidates my anger at the fact that Atlantis is gone, but with the way this last season has been playing out, perhaps it’s for the best. Cooper and Wright alienated a lot of fans with the way they went about introducing this new show. They could have gone about doing it the way they introduced Atlantis, by introducing the characters (or idea) on the existing show and then running the two shows concurrently. They also gave a metaphorical “Fuck you” to SGA fans with the “Younger demographic” spiel they used to defend their choice for producing Universe. Many of the people I know who are fans fall outside of that target audience they so wish to court and even those who do fall into that category are not happy with how things happened.
So even if I do give Universe just the one chance, Cooper and Wright will still have my emnity for this.
