They say that hate is a strong word. Well, it’s not strong enough to say how I feel about Brad Wright, Robert C. Cooper and anyone else involved in the cancellation of Stargate:Atlantis.
I’m not going to link to Gateworld or anywhere else where the announcement was made, I’m sure if you look you can find it. I should have know this was coming. They got rid of Elizabeth and Carson. When they did bring Carson back (thank you Save Carson Beckett), they didn’t do it until the end of season four and then only gave him five episodes in season five. Mallozzi has been cautious and wary in his blog about the possibility of a season six. I should have known.
In one of the announcements I read, production costs were mentioned as a factor. I can buy this to a certain extent. My only response to that is why wasn’t this mentioned before? Production costs are always going to be a factor in whether or not a show gets continued. We all know that making a science fiction show is going to cost more than making a thirty minute comedy, so tell us about it. We as fans could have rallied and petitioned advertisers to help or done something.
A lot of people are upset at the Sci-Fi channel, but ultimately it was not their decision to make. Atlantis is their big show, keeping them afloat along with Eureka. It was MGM’s decision to pull the plug. They are the ones footing the bill for the production. They decided that after ten years, SG-1 was done making them money (even though the fans campaigned to keep it going). They want to do the same with SGA. Cancel the show, make several direct to DVD movies because they are cheaper than a weekly show and bank on Wright and Cooper’s OMG SHINY new show which we know next to nothing about because it has the Stargate name attached to it.
I for one am not going to fall for it. Wright and Cooper and MGM can keep their shiny new show. They broke my heart when they canceled SG-1 and though the movies (Ark of Truth and Continuum) were okay, they are no substitute for having my show on every week. I thought, at least I have Atlantis. Well now I don’t. They’ve burned me again. And unlike Joss Whedon, who also continues to break my heart but in such an awesome way that I’ll keep coming back to anything he does, Wright and Cooper I am done with you. You changed the show we first loved into something that we don’t recognize, frequently have no idea how to deal with the characters you created (writing them differently from episode to the next) and now you’re spitting in the face of the fans who have earned you all of your money. I’m glad that every DVD set of SG-1 and Atlantis I have was bought second hand so that I didn’t contribute to your pockets.
There is already a livejournal community and a petition going around to save Atlantis. But I won’t be joining or signing. I was all over it when they cancelled SG-1, but see what little it accomplished. We have two movies, but nothing else. I’m tired of putting my heart on the line and getting it stomped on. No more. I won’t even give the OMG SHINY new show a chance unless I hear A LOT of good press from people I trust.
So goodbye Atlantis, I will continue to watch the rest of the season with a heavy heart. I will always have a place for you in my fannish endeavors, and I will continue to write fanfiction because you the show and all the characters I love deserve so much better. Thank you for five wonderful years.
